About City Sales
City
Sales is a full line convenience store supplier located in the
Chicago suburb of Highland, Indiana. Paul Skurka, an immigrant from what is now
Slovakia, founded City Sales, Inc. in 1950, starting the business with a used
station wagon and a clipboard. He sold in the morning, claiming to have
everything, and picked up the merchandise in Chicago in the afternoon. The next
morning he delivered the product and sold some more, repeating the process
daily. The original intent was simply to service the many small taverns and meat
markets in town with snacks, beef jerky, some sundries and tobacco items.
A small storefront on New York Avenue in Whiting, Indiana served as the first
warehouse. After a few years space became an issue and the company was moved to
a larger storefront in Whiting located on 119th Street in the center of the
downtown business district. Joe Gulacey was the first official employee hired,
but Grace Simaga, Paul's cousin was an invaluable assistant throughout the first
few years of business. Over the years the company grew and eventually moved to
East Chicago, IN. Shortly after moving to East Chicago the company began
servicing customers in Illinois while at the same time expanding its territory
east into north central Indiana.
At the end of 1988 the company moved to Highland, IN and now services much of
Northern Indiana and Illinois. Customers are evenly divided between chain
accounts and small independents. The product line has changed substantially and
we recently completed the construction of a new
120,000 cubic foot freezer warehouse.
